Show creator admits The Voice is not good enough

The Voice
Ratings flop ... The Voice

THE Voice will undergo a radical revamp next year – after the show’s Dutch creator admitted it could be improved.

The BBC1 talent show has seen its ratings crash by more than half following the end of popular blind auditions and battle round stages, which peaked at 12.1million.
Sunday night’s results show, which featured a performance by Kylie Minogue, drew a peak audience of just 5.2million — although it was 100,000 up on Saturday night, when Cheryl Cole performed.
Now The Voice’s Dutch creator John De Mol — who has also made Big Brother and Deal Or No Deal — has admitted the format of the live shows must change for next year’s second series.
He said: “We’ll have a meeting with the BBC to come up with some new ideas to make the live shows more exciting.
“The role of the coaches can be bigger. In the semi-final, the coaches were just watching the talent perform. They had no influence. That’s something we should change.
“On Saturday, it was 100 per cent up to the audience.”
John also said that the relentless positivity of the show — which has been widely criticised — was a problem. He admitted: “It’s something we must work on. More competition.”
The media mogul added that he wanted to see the current four coaches — Jessie J, Sir Tom Jones, Will.i.am and Danny O’Donoghue — return next year.

John said: “We’ll talk about the coaches with the BBC right after the final this Saturday. As far as I’m concerned we have four great characters but it’s too early to say.”
But John did have positive words for the show — telling Radio Times that the singers on the UK Voice were the best of around 50 versions around the world.
A BBC insider said: “Of course there are things we can learn and we will reflect on the series and make it even better next year.”
